I had reason to give the subject of MS travel hacks some deep thought recently. Here I was just coming back from a trip and feeling better than ever as usual. But then I came across this post on IG by a fellow MS warrior, alluding to feeling unwell on returning from her trip due to the food, alcohol, excessive walking, and even feeling like she was in an MS flair.

That’s when I realized that what I do when I travel is not what many pwMS do. And it might be a good idea to share some of what I do that has me feeling great after a trip, rather than run down and my MS doing worse.

Plan Ahead

When you fail to plan, you plan to fail. See, before MS, I was a super organized person. And despite cognitive decline, I didn’t lose all of those skills thankfully.

Some of the things I always planned ahead for on our family trips are food, water, activities, fitness, supplements and medications, fun, downtime, and sleep. Yes, downtime had to come into the equation because when we first got married, my husband would fill up every day with activities. That was exhausting. It didn’t feel like vacation. Once we had a kid with sensory issues that literally needed rest days from Disney, it became even more apparent that so as not to need a vacay after the vacay, the vacay needed to feel less like work. 😆

And I just needed to update the routine to fit in with MS these days.

Food Related MS Travel Hacks

Even before MS, we always planned for food. We were never a family that planned to eat all of our meals out on vacation, because that usually meant weight gain. For me, it would be at least 5lb of weight gain, regardless of whether we exercised and stayed active on the trip. So we had developed a habit as a family of staying in condos. This was easy as Marriott timeshare owners then, way before Air BnBs became all the rage. Or efficiency suites at the least. With a refrigerator and microwave, and better still with a stove too, we could rustle up so many things.

Our first chore on arrival in any city in the world was always grocery shopping. So whether it was New York, Orlando, St. Thomas, Or a city in Tenerife Spain, we always found our way to the grocery store pretty quick.

And if it was something like a cruise, then we consciously went for tons of fruits for breakfast with proteins and either go light or skip the bread. We chose healthy options for lunch like a salad, and tried not to overdo dinner. We also went easy on desserts and went to the gym daily.

With an MS diagnoses, the issue of food became even more important. It wasn’t just about weight and general health anymore, it had to be anti-inflammatory for me. Initially we focused on gluten and dairy free. As I dialed down more on nutrition, I paid attention to other food sensitivities, avoided sugar and alcohol, and went for organic foods.

How Did I Prepare For Our Last Trip Food-Wise?

Our last trip to St. Thomas had us shopping for organic produce, which I had researched ahead. We also took some things with us like canned coconut milk, and canned sardines. I took enough organic ginger and lemon for my first few mornings of warm detox water. We took organic spices. Anything that was non-perishable, we took with us such as chia seeds for me, and oatmeal for the rest of the family. I even took my sprouted nuts, almond and walnuts, as well as sprouted pumpkin seeds. And I took my shake powders like my red maca and hemp hearts.

It is also important to have your digestive enzymes, especially ones for gluten and dairy. This is important even if you don’t regularly take digestive enzymes. Enzymedica is a good one for gluten and dairy.

I had a binder on me at all times. Even if I did end up eating food I wasn’t so sure of, I could take a binder such as activated charcoal, or one containing activated charcoal. My fave is GI Detox. This will bind to all things that could be toxic to me, and some good minerals too. But it wouldn’t matter if it protected me that one time.

Since I don’t drink alcohol at home, I didn’t drink alcohol on the trip. When I used to drink alcohol, I kept my intake on trips to just about the same. If you suddenly start to drink excessively on vacay, that could negatively impact you.

Water Related MS Travel Hacks

This might sound trivial for for example on a cruise, if your choice is bottled water, you need to order it ahead. That way, it’s in your cabin when you get on board.

We have done different things on trips. We have boiled water to drink. We have opted for bottled water. But my favorite is if we have access to some kind of filtered water.

On our last trip, I tried to get enough filtered water from the gym for all of my drinking purposes. I used that as an excuse for some extra exercise to run to the gym when I needed more water.

It is important to stay hydrated at all times to keep things moving and help flush out toxins.

I also do structure my drinking water on vacay now by using the terahertz wand on the water I drink, at least in the morning.

Activities and Mobility Aids Related MS Travel Hacks

My magic word here is pacing. And asking for help. There is no need for heroism. At the airport, use the wheelchair service. Or your own scooter. Or walker. Take your cane. Mobility aids are your friend, even if you don’t need it all the time.

Let go of the ego!

Don’t push yourself to do too much and listen to your body. Don’t walk miles if your body can’t take it. Take breaks. Walk at your own pace.

Sit out some activities and let the rest of the group do their thing. Don’t feel pressured to be a part of everything.

Even if you don’t normally use mobility aids, if you’re going to Europe, or anywhere that calls for public transportation such as trains and buses rather than taxis and ubers, take a folding cane at the least.

I recommend the Folding Flipstick Seat Cane. It folds into a bag, and has a seat for you to rest if needed. That was all I took with me on our last trip and it worked so well even when the wheelchair assist at the airport was backed up for hours. The Atlanta airport is crazy busy but this little device got me through it.

Fitness Related MS Travel Hacks

I have in recent years taken my own fitness gear with me on our trips. But even before then, if there was a gym, I went regularly. If there was no gym, I walked around in the pool for resistance, since I don’t swim, and took walks on the beach.

I always had a plan for fitness.

The gear that I have been taking recently are my own towel yoga mat, and different types of resistance bands. Before my back started to resist it, I would take my jumprope with me. That is a very good exercise for travel, as you can do it in a hotel room. There’s usually enough space near the door, even in a small New York hotel room.

On my last trip, I knew they had water aerobics as a free activity offered by the resort at least, but they had actually expanded the offerings at the Marriott and had 2 fitness classes daily. One land based, and one water based. It was amazing.

Supplements Related MS Travel Hacks

Always make sure your supplements and not just your medications are in your carry-on baggage. That is the only way to ensure that they do not get lost or delayed.

For me, my supplements are as important as my medications so I pack them together. I had a whole hand luggage dedicated to medications and supplements.

I can replace food way more easily than I can supplements while on vacation.

Biohacking Tools Related MS Travel Hacks

It’s no secret that I’m huge on biohacking. To that end, I cannot travel without my biohacking toys, at least some of them.

On my last trip, I took my Vielight Duo, Terahertz Wand, and AMD IonClease Solo (foot detox for the kiddo) which needed a whole hand luggage by the way (see pic to the left). But I could fit the other toys inside it.

I’ve had the Vielight Duo the longest and I can’t go anywhere without it. It is a brain photobiomodulation device which has both infrared and red light therapy. This helps to energize the mitochondria. As we know, MS is fundamentally an issue with the functioning of our mitochondria. This is why Dr. Terry Wahls TED Talk is titled Minding Your Mitochondria.

Fun & Rest Days Related MS Travel Hacks

Of course there has to be fun on vacation, right? But plan fun that is appropriate for you. Don’t plan to go on the party Catamaran if you don’t drink alcohol or you don’t drink a lot of alcohol. That’s like planning to fail. It is not going to end well.

Don’t plan for long tiring structured hikes with a group, unless you have no mobility or muscle fatigue issues.

We have actually done less and less structured activity over the years so that we can go at my pace.

And we definitely do not have a plan for every single day so that we can just be. Watch the sun rise, or the sun set. Or both. Lounge on the beach for hours. Take a leisurely walk on the beach with your boo in the evening. Sit poolside for hours. Do yoga on the beach. Meditate on the beach. Get your grounding in. Be one with nature.

Sleep

It might seem like getting enough sleep on vacation should not be a problem but if one doesn’t plan for it, one can easily not get enough sleep.

I remember the times when we would leave on an all day excursion at 6am. And even on this last trip, my morning workout class was at 8:30am. So if I did not manage the rest of my day well, or go to bed on time, I could have easily not slept enough on the trip.

During sleep is when we heal. Let us prioritize sleep while on vacation.

I am Dr. Folake Taylor, and I live with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis PPMS. After 15 years in internal medicine primary care, while battling disability/ PPMS for the last 7 of the 15, I found myself diving deeper into holistic health for answers. Now I’m turning my lemons into lemonade. I refuse to allow physical and cognitive disability to stop me, from fulfilling my destiny of using my voice to benefit the world with my knowledge, which I did prior to my illness. Sharing what I have learned and am still learning about the body’s ability to heal itself, which is quite different from what I learned in medical school, is now my mission. I created an online self-paced course for MS recovery called MS Mastery®, and I will continue to take you along with me as the daily journey continues.

Some might ask how did we go so long without getting Covid? I’d like to say OCD-type precautions from all 3 of us: the hubs, our daughter, and Moi!

[And yes, I actually started to write this a year and a half ago, didn’t post it, and then felt it wasn’t relevant anymore. But now I guess it is again, because we’re talking about new strains of Covid and all…]

Back to the story…

We are that family that was wearing N95s on a flight to NYC in February of 2020 when nobody else was. We had the wipes on the plane which prompted the lady next to us to bring out her wipes as well. I wondered if she had been reluctant to bring it out because she didn’t want to be the only one. But we don’t think like that. We set trends. And we did not care that we stuck out like a sore thumb and got a lot of stares, like aliens.

The Mask

Throughout the time when the consensus was that we didn’t need to wear masks and cause a shortage for healthcare workers, we did in my household. When we got tired of wearing N95s ( and paying for them!!!), we switched to KN95s. I bought 2 boxes of surgical masks that we have not used at all because I knew it was nonsense. I knew that, even when the recommendation was to wear a cloth mask or surgical mask. We wore our KN95s proudly until the consensus became, to wear KN95s for adequate protection.

Would you believe that it got to where I was buying KN95s in a wholesale box that contained about 200 masks? The upside to that was when there were shortages and the cost went up, we were fully stocked. 😂

We took on sheltering in place like champs. Haven’t been anywhere since that NYC trip.

Having been to Asia and seeing what they do to combat pollution and infections, and with Covid starting in China, we decided we would do what they were doing that worked from very early on. Also, having also partly grown up in Nigeria (hubby and I), we have a great deal of respect for the devastation that communicable diseases can cause, over and above our autonomy as humans. We have seen Cholera, and dysentery wipe out hundreds from an outbreak.

The world was told to stop masking, though, for many, the world had opened up for more than a year now.

But I have to say that in the last month or so, we got tired of the mask too. Right now I do feel like it’s a chore.

Covid unfortunately is here to stay, like the flu, and we have to figure out how to live with it.

Immune Boosting Foods

The hubby and I eat very healthy and eat a lot of veggies and fruits. Particularly, we eat nutrient-dense anti-inflammatory and antioxidant foods which in my case, include avoiding known triggers from my food sensitivity panel. I pride myself in having a variety of colors on my plate. My Instagram page is proof.

The kiddo on the other hand has sensory issues with taste and texture from being on the autism spectrum, a condition known as Sensory Processing Disorder SPD. She does not eat a healthy diet. We try our best to modulate the versions of what she eats such as her milk is pasture-raised rather than conventional, and stuff like that.

Immune Boosting, “Anti-Viral” Supplements

We all take supplements in the family because you cannot get all your nutrients from food these days. Then the hubs and I get lots of sunlight almost every day.

In particular, for Covid prevention/ support, we have on hand the Xlear nasal spray which is reported to possibly be effective against Covid and other viruses. And I have to say that each time I felt a viral illness coming on such as a tickle in my throat and I used it, I felt better instantly.

Since then however, there has been a study published that proves this to be true. Xlear nasal spray significantly reduced SARS-CoV-2 infection by 62% among health care workers.

We also have Sambucus Elderberry (with Zinc and Vitamin C) on hand. I found that elderberry shortens the duration of viral illnesses. I discovered this when my kid was a toddler and it has been on rotation in our house since. We used to take another herbal preventative supplement for travel but they did not have a kid version. That’s how research led me to elderberry with zinc.

Now, the initial consensus on elderberry with regard to Covid was to avoid it, because it would supposedly rev up the immune system and cause a cytokine storm. I didn’t believe or agree with it, but this NYT article expresses the general messaging around elderberry at the time.

And guess what? We finally have evidence that it not only does it prevent and treat viral illnesses in general but specifically, it inhibits replication of SARS-CoV-2.

Good old Vitamin D also deserves an applause. In January 2023, the NIH finally agree that it prevents the need for ICU hospitalizations. This is from the same NIH who in September 2022, said they could not recommend for or against Vitamin D. More research…

I have a lot of antioxidants on hand for regular use as part of managing multiple sclerosis MS symptoms. Some I take daily, and some I take when I need a boost of something to counteract acute inflammation. They proved to be invaluable for navigating the Covid landscape.

This is pretty much how we went 2.5 years without actually getting sick from Covid, by utilizing easily accessible natural products and practices. Pretty impressive even if I say so myself.

Supportive Devices

Steam inhalation was something I did several times during the pandemic as well. It is a modality that was reported early on to allegedly help kill the virus in the nasal as well as lung passages if you do deep inhalations. Some people had a mixture of antioxidants such as turmeric/ginger/ garlic and similar ingredients as the liquid that they inhaled.

I went with just the steam from distilled or filtered & boiled water and found it effective. I essentially did the steam inhalation anytime I took Sambucus elderberry to ward off whatever was trying to start. We forget that all the other viral infections and the flu did not take a hike just because Covid showed up, and the same basic principles work for them too.

Incidentally, there is now research supporting steam inhalation. Imagine that! Holistic practices that were initially touted as folkloric and shut down, now proven by research, like almost everything else with Covid. I first learned about it from Nigerians in the UK, especially those with asthma, who swore by it.

I tested it out each time I felt I was coming down with something and it was simply magical. So I held on to it in my toolbox. I always had this machine anyway as my mother was big on inhaling Vicks when I was little and it stayed with me. She would add Vicks to hot water, have me lean over the steam and cover my head with a towel. The fancy machines came later. But I now use Eucalyptus oil rather than Vicks if I want to add some kind of menthol to it.

Vaccine

The key I believe was staying prepared and staying ahead of Covid, rather than reactive. But there is more than one way to skin a cow.

We are all double-vaccinated for Covid but not boosted. The vaccine became less appealing after I had a serious reaction to the second Covid vaccine. Also, as much as western medicine says vaccines do not cause autism, there are components of vaccines that our kids on the spectrum are sensitive to and cannot process or detox as well as other folks can. I did not like that the Covid vaccine contains polyethylene glycol (PEG), a chemical I try to avoid putting on my skin or hair. And I strongly believe that is what I reacted to in the vaccine.

According to this CDC article, under a subsection titled If You Are Allergic to an Ingredient in a COVID-19 Vaccine or Had a Previous Severe Allergic Reaction, it states:

If you are allergic to polyethylene glycol (PEG), you should not get Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.

If you are allergic to polysorbate, you should not get Novavax COVID-19 vaccines.

Well, I guess I’m allergic. And so are a lot of people. That is not a chemical that should go into the body.

Thank God for knowledge of biohacking which is what helped stop that reaction from being a full-blown MS thing (I don’t have actual flares because of the nature of PPMS! But I get really decompensated for a long time. Sometimes several excruciating months. But I digress). That vaccine led to a cytokine storm and a very fast downward spiral of acute inflammation for me. I talk about what I did here if you’re interested, in a series of posts curated in my IG guides under biohacking.

The 1st Covid Experience

My daughter and I had a cold of sorts the week prior, and that got better over a few days. I honestly considered Covid at that point as we had both been to an art show in her school a few days prior. So I first tested her for Covid then because she goes to school and has gone to school in person since August of 2020. But it was negative and she got better and made it back to school. Allergies were also affecting a lot of people at the time.

On Sunday, she developed a sore throat and said she felt like she had strep. And on Monday she missed school. Come Tuesday morning, her first words were, “I feel like I’m dying.” That’s when I knew she was very sick. I grabbed another one of those at-home Covid tests the US government kindly made available to us via USPS. Grateful!!! 🙏🏾

Her Covid test lit up, on contact. You’re supposed to look for 2 lines, one for the test itself (T) and the other for the control (C). It most certainly was 2 lines immediately! I still timed it for 20 minutes as instructed but it didn’t change, and I did not expect it to.

As I tried to figure out how to tell her and stop my husband from going to work, he came down the stairs. I had no choice but to go, “I’m so sorry babe but Jordan has Covid. You can’t go to work.” This man had on a nice suit, decked to the nines as always.

Our Covid tests were negative, for the hubby and I. Thankful. We were also symptom-free except for what seemed like allergies for me.

What Now?

We all went into isolation, and started to order groceries to be delivered or when necessary, pick up outside the store in my vehicle without contact with any human.

Mama went into carer protector mode. Xlear, Zarbee’s elderberry gummies. Extra Vitamin C. Usual meds and supplements for kiddo included Vitamin D, Zinc several days a week, and Magnesium.

I stressed the importance of hydration to her from the start, as you need to flush out toxins that are being released as you kill off any organisms that are making you sick. Vital!!!

For hubby, he started to take a double dose of Elderberry capsules and the Xlear nasal spray. This man has the best immunity y’all. He’s been back at work for what seems like forever, with several Covid breakouts at work. But he was also the most careful of us all. He did not play, especially concerning masking up.

I also double-dosed Elderberry capsules, took Xlear, Astaxanthin, Garlic, and Ginger. My regular daily medications contained Turmeric, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Magnesium, and Liposomal Glutathione. If you want a breakdown of what I consider the most beneficial anti-oxidants for managing MS symptoms and inflammation in general, you can access the resource titled Top 10 Antioxidants for MS here.

Another thing I immediately did was steam inhalation with the Vicks personal steam inhaler, with just steam from water.

We started to order everything as delivery, or do a pick-up in which I’d stay in the vehicle.

The teenager with Covid started to feel better within hours of loading her up, but she still slept all day. She had that crummy feeling you have with a viral infection. The crud!!! The next day she was able to take a school test online, and another test she had missed the day after.

Things slowly returned to normal toward the end of the week.

Any Negatives?

There is one downside to the Xlear (Xylitol) nasal spray. I am particularly sensitive to its gut microbiome suppressing properties. It thus constipates me. The good thing is this is temporary and the very first day I don’t use the spray, my bowel movements are back to normal. TMI? We keep it real over here. 🤣

Boy, is it hard to isolate yourself from your kid?!

The 2nd Covid Experience

It was September of the same year. 2022. Hubby and I were invited to a big party in downtown Atlanta on a Saturday evening by a friend who had paid for a table at a fundraising event. I was happy to be out. It was a huge ballroom and there was not a mask in sight.

We had a blast and saw tons of old and new friends. I met some IG friends in real life. IRL as the kiddos say.

Within 2 days, I had the runs but it was mild. A 24 hr virus I thought, as it had let up before my much awaited concert.

Nothing was going to stop me from going to my Backstreet Boys concert on Tuesday evening that had been rescheduled from during lockdown. I was ecstatic. And it was so much fun, even though I was seeing the exact same DNA World Tour for the third time!

Vegas. Atlanta. Now Alpharetta.

All gut symptoms were gone and I was ecstatic. Why couldn’t I shake this headache though? It kept intensifying as the hours went by during the concert. And I was just so thirsty. I kept drinking those $6 concert waters, wondering why I was so parched.

By the time I got home, I knew I was sick. Wednesday morning, I took the Covid test from the government and it was positive. Yikes!

What Did I Do?

I contacted everyone I’d had contact with at the party. Turns out the friend who I’d held hands with while saying hello and who also sat right behind me at the next table, had similar mild runs along with her husband for a few days now, preceding my symptoms.

Shoot! I caught it from her.

I also remembered that for the first time since the pandemic started, I didn’t use my Xlear nose spray after possible exposure. I’d gotten comfortable. My guard was down, like Covid had left the building. But it hadn’t.

And it took me a few days to think of Covid because it started in my gut because my exposure was touch, and not my nose or my throat if I had primarily inhaled it. The respiratory symptoms came later.

And I know the Xlear would still have helped my gut where it started because I always end up swallowing it anyway.

So I isolated downstairs away from everyone else. I started to throw everything but the kitchen sink at it.

Elderberry with Zinc. Xlear. Hydration and more hydration. Steam inhalation. Astaxanthin triple dose. Tons of vitamin D. Turmeric. Magnesium. Vitamin C. Garlic. Ginger. Cinnamon. Liposomal Glutathione. Infrared light treatments. Structured Silver. Essential oils like Eucalyptus. Prayers. Meditation. Visualizations. A lot of sunlight. EFT Tapping. An unwavering belief that I would beat it and it wouldn’t beat me, and I would not have Long Covid most especially.

While in the thick of it with Covid-19, I found out that silver nanoparticles at 20ppm was effective against Covid-19, while I was taking structured nanosilver at 30ppm.

Not only are antioxidants like Astaxanthin good for vaccine reactions, Astaxanthin is also good for Covid-19 infection. It is effective at

I felt really bad for a day and a half, then it start to lift and I was left battling bronchospasms and a cough from deep within my chest.

I did not go to the doctor, or urgent care or consider Paxlovid. But then again, I am a doctor. I was going to fix it naturally however. And except for a few pills of Medrol which actually did nothing for my symptoms, I was able to keep to natural treatment.

Most importantly, nobody else in the house caught it.

Any Sequelae

Covid did not affect my MS much except for the initial few days of fatigue and laying around, for which I’m thankful.

But I did notice one thing. I developed MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) at least for a while, and it kicked up the leaky gut a notch, during which time I had to go back to eating cooked vegetables over salads, because I wasn’t digesting them well raw.

That slowly calmed back down over time, especially with the help of Serum Bovine Immunoglobulin, SBI Protect by Orthomolecular. That, was a Godsend.

There are many articles linking MCAS to Long Covid. Articles such as this. It makes me even more grateful because I know that if I hadn’t known how to handle Covid properly, I might have ended up with long Covid too.

But even with all that, how the Covid infection made me feel, wasn’t as bad as how the vaccine reaction made me feel. That cytokine storm reaction from the Covid vaccine was from the pits of hell and threw my MS into a tailspin.

I don’t ever want to feel like that again.

Masking Now?

I stopped masking after my Covid episode and subsequent research supports the fact that natural immunity provides stronger and longer lasting immunity than vaccines and that boosters were not exactly necessary for the general population and in fact increased the risk of a cardiac episode in young men. I continue to be safe and practice good hand hygiene.

However, if I went into a place like a medical establishment which required masking, I still complied.

I even still use those pesky wipes at the grocery store on the carts just to be safe. And if I feel like i’ve been exposed, been in a crowd, or I feel a tickle in my throat, best believe I’m grabbing my Xlear spray to chase it back where it came from, followed by at least a few days of Elderberry with Zinc. 😆

In Conclusion

I am grateful that nobody else got Covid each time, and the kiddo and I got over it pretty fast, considering some people have long-haul Covid for months to years past the infection. Our habits helped. Our tools also greatly helped. Those tools were information, expertise, and access. I do not take any of these for granted.

Good nutrition is key in boosting your immune status. This I believe is largely responsible for me not getting Covid till I let my guard down, despite living with primary progressive multiple sclerosis PPMS, and being on an immune-suppressive treatment (Ocrevus) which is like chemotherapy.

I’d be remiss if I did not speak on the role of a higher power in all of these. It’s not all habits and behavior and being careful. I do feel like God who is the higher power we plug into (yours might be different), has protected us. It is vital to be connected to a higher power, pray, meditate, spend time in nature and appreciate it, exercise, do yoga, and ground yourself in the earth beneath your bare feet.

One thing I know for sure about Covid-19 is that there is still so much we don’t know at almost 4 years in. And people are very passionate about their belief, whatever it is!!!

I try my best to follow the evidence. And while waiting on evidence, I used logic, experience and anecdotal evidence from trusted sources.

Till next time, stay healthy and safe my friends!

We need to have a convo about the disc herniation saga that occurred very recently. Grab a drink, will ya? Not that drink! 🤣

[Full disclosure, I wrote this last year and never posted it. Then I actually had another episode this year. As in, the last 2 months. That update will come at the end. Kapisch? Good.]

Can I be all the way real for a minute? I threw my back out. And I hate it. My back has been so good for so long that this brace-wearing, and needing to take this much care not to aggravate it is so unfamiliar to me.

It makes me feel like I failed. I got spoiled by feeling really good for quite a while. Because it hadn’t happened in a while, I’d almost forgotten how excruciating it can be. To be exact, my last episode was in 2018, while on vacation in Trinidad & Tobago. It. Was. Not. Good. I digress.

Facts

I. I have degenerative disc disease in my low back.

2. I’ve had 2 back surgeries in the same month in the past. 2014 to be precise.

3. That level of trauma does not completely return to 100%.

4. The underlying factor for me has always been deep spasticity from multiple sclerosis, and never an injury.

Ruminations

So why am I beating myself up for having a flare of the disc issues in my low back? A problem that isn’t new?

I honestly started to blame myself. Maybe it’s because I went from 3lb weights to 5lb weights. I had been very careful to go from 1lb to 2lb to 3lb. Then I skipped over 4lb to 5lb. And this took years, people. Years of gentle and progressive strength training, building up my core, my back, my hips, my arms, and my legs.

My other thought was it was because I added new equipment. Or I increased my aerobics and started to do some things I hadn’t done in a decade. Or wait, maybe it was a little of all of those things, or doing too many things at once and not giving myself a chance to see how my body adjusted to each change.

While it is true that I got a little excited about how good I was doing and may have overdone things, of what use is it to scrutinize my every action and beat myself up?

It could be none of those things. Or it may be some other event or action I can’t even remember.

What’s The Plan?

The important thing is for me to chart a plan of recovery.

I don’t need to go and see my pain doctor, who I just saw, now that I only see her every 6 months. Neither do I need pain medication or an epidural. I have been healed from chronic pain and haven’t even taken Motrin for this. I’ve only used some topical anti-inflammatories. And, I will also not be taking steroids, IV, IM, or oral.

I know my body enough to know that a disc has been aggravated, without an expensive MRI (with contrast!). Likely my L5S1 unstable disc. This disc is what we call para-central which means it is bulging on both sides, but more on the left. As usual. I need my back brace to get through the day, especially as the day goes by. And I need to avoid certain exercises for now. Then I need to exercise less but focus on strengthening exercises for my low back, core, and glutes like the bird dog, superman (cue meme below! 🤣), and such. I need to let the dumbbells be for now and use body weight for exercises, except when my back is supported. Also important is avoiding back flexion and doing back extension exercises that look like mini up-dogs throughout the day.

This I Know For Sure

I don’t need PT. Having done these exercises for years, I can be my own PT. The print-outs and instructions from 2014 are right here for guidance. My PT folder is labeled PT Exercises. It contains exercises for the back, Piriformis syndrome, hip bursitis, and Iliotibial Band syndrome. That took me back to just how sick I was at that point in time. Those weren’t separate occurrences. Dang! I don’t even know how I got through those days.

I vaguely remember holding myself together with a lot of KT Tape, and silver-infused shorts under any outfit.

My energy needs to be focused on healing. Period. And looking ahead rather than what I can’t change.

The Universe Has My Back

And the universe sent me messages to make sure I got it. Within 24 hours, I heard different people on social media come through with the same message: Give yourself grace. When you make a mistake, don’t beat yourself up. Learn the lesson, chart a plan, and move forward.

So what? Move on. Do better.

Tiffany The Budgenista said it.

Mel Robbins said it.

I believe I heard it in one other place and then finally I was like, “God, I hear you! And I receive this message!”

Healing

So I’ll focus on healing over the next few weeks, making sure it heals with the disc pushed back in and not while sticking out, so I don’t develop a new element of chronic pain that I’ll need to nurse if it starts to impinge on a nerve.

I’m the one person that doesn’t miss our Zoom workout classes usually, but this last Saturday, I skipped class to get more sleep and just heal. Then I skipped Wednesday as well. And for at least 6 weeks, my exercises will be modified.

And it’s OK to not know everything, to not be perfect, to not always get it right.

I’m human.

And I’ve evolved enough to be vulnerable and share this with you, so we can grow together.

This blog post feels cathartic. So, without knowing it, having you in my world is already making things better. I am grateful for the gift of YOU.

Inflammation

After going through that whirlwind of emotions, self-talk, and redirecting, it suddenly dawned on me. I’d fallen prey to the Western medicine model of disc issues being a mechanical problem. But in multiple sclerosis especially, it is all about inflammation.

Duh, This happened a week and a half before my next Ocrevus infusion. I’d been looking out for signs of inflammation, but in my knees, because that’s what usually swells up. This time, it was deep spasticity in my low back and some in my neck. I’d been noticing some neck pain and thought I did something to it.

Also, I had stopped my Evening Primrose Oil EPO for a while because I started to take another Omega-6, not realizing that my body really needed the GLA (gamma-linoleic acid) in EPO. Not only did it throw me into full-blown hot-flash peri-menopause hell, it likely affected my immunity too, which would explain why I had a disc re-herniation. The other Omega-6 which contained linoleic and linolenic acid did not take the place of the GLA in EPO after all. Lesson learned.

As soon as I reframed my thoughts, I knew what to do. In any case, if I wasn’t going to do steroids, then I needed something natural to calm it down.

Anti-Inflammation

So I took a bunch of Vit D, Magnesium Chelate, and my favorite antioxidant. It’s the one I dubbed the most potent antioxidant. It’s magical. If you have my antioxidant resource, then you know what it is. If you don’t have it, what are you waiting for? Grab my Top 10 Antioxidants for MS here.

Hydration

I made sure to hydrate as the disc tending to be dehydrated is part of the problem. And I’d recently had trouble retaining the water that I drank because I was low on some electrolytes. I have since started replenishing those, which has greatly improved my hydration. The water that I drink is staying in me now rather than going right through me.

Energy Is Everything

Another thing I did was that I focused on positivity, joy, and an unwavering belief that it was just a temporary hiccup and I’d be fine shortly. The energy around me started to shift in line with this belief system. Voila!

I focused on the little bird’s nest in our backyard (by that I mean inside the grill!!!) and the chick that had hatched. I took videos and photos daily and shared them on IG. New life always brings an energy of rebirth with it. That canceled out the tendency to focus on the things I couldn’t do as I lay on ice and slowed everything down to heal.

YOU can create YOUR good outcome with your mind, along with the right actions. They go together.

I hope you try it out.

Trinidad & Tobago

No Man’s Land in Tobago. 2019.

I did promise to tell you about this, right? So, back to 2019, where I did not get to enjoy our trip to the Caribbean because I spent a lot of time laying on my back and in excruciating pain. Flying from one island to the other in small planes did not help. Nor did trying to tour the city of Trinidad and see the sights in a taxi we hired.

That has got to be the most pain I’d ever experienced in my life, outside of when I had my first back surgery and was sent home the same night. Now, that should be against the law. But ever since the insurance companies stopped paying for overnight stays for pain control and such “trivialities” in their eyes… I digress.

I spent the greater part of this vacation laying horizontal in bed. The most memorable parts of my trip were the breakfast buffets (which I made it to daily regardless of pain level!), and the amount of papaya goodness I had on that trip. It seems to have canceled out the negative memories of laying in bed, and excruciating pain sitting at an airport gate while waiting to board a plane. Even with oral steroids on board, it felt like hell. Hell in paradise.

And though I always have my supplements, my general level of inflammation back then was excessive, and my expertise at biohacking was still somewhat limited compared to now.

It didn’t help my psyche that I couldn’t eat a lot of their famous foods because they’re heavy on gluten. The double was a kind of sandwich that reminded me of individual-size bread loaves from Nigeria. It was a lot of baked goods. I simply stuck to the fruits and vegetables so I wouldn’t end up in the hospital.

In Conclusion

By the second day after I loaded up on supplements, the inflammation was way calmer. As I kept doing my back extension exercises to push the disc back in, the pain in my hip and leg started to improve. When the pain moves up from your legs into your back, you know you’re getting better. Then eventually, even the back pain subsides.

This disc herniation saga is about to be in the rearview mirror…

Most chronic illnesses are about chronic inflammation. Sometimes you have acute inflammation compounding the chronic in the form of flares or worsening symptoms.

Food, nutraceuticals, supplements, and biohacking are all very powerful. Rest. Stay hydrated. Get in the sun every day. Do your grounding, Meditate. Don’t hold on to any toxic emotions. Focus on joy.

Now, get on my Waitlist for MS Mastery where you can learn exactly how I do these things with the next cohort.

ADDENDUM

As stated at the beginning, this blog post was written a year ago. And I just got over a similar episode of disc herniation and increased inflammation in my back and hips, especially the left.

This took the better part of the last 2 months. Similar situation because I was just about due for my Ocrevus infusion as well.

But there’s something very huge that was different.

I found another cause for increased inflammation that trumped everything else as the primary culprit this time.

MY THOUGHTS.

It happened in a way that is different from anything I’ve ever experienced as a result of stress or worry or thoughts that did not serve me.

And it didn’t matter what I did to heal physically, this time I didn’t get better till I completely reframed my thoughts.

It always hits differently when the source of your worry is your child and not yourself…

Negative thought patterns have been found to impact the immune system and ramp up inflammatory cytokines. A 2019 article in Medical News Today stated,

“Now, a study conducted by specialists from Pennsylvania State University in State College has found that negative moods may change the way in which the immune response functions, and they are associated with an increased risk of exacerbated inflammation.”

For my A++ students, the actual published paper can be found here.

These days, I no longer use the word hate to describe anything to do with my body or illness. When you know better, you do better.

So, in conclusion, are you minding your thoughts, warrior?

This daily affirmation tool helps me:

My thinking is peaceful, calm, and centered. I’m willing to change all patterns of criticism. I love and approve of myself.

I created an online program for MS recovery called MS Mastery™, and I will continue to take you along with me as the daily journey continues.

Let’s talk about mental wellness and MS. Now, before we dive into the deets, kudos to this sentiment that we’re now pushing, that mental health is simply health. I am completely here for it. I hope you are too!

I choose to use the term mental wellness as opposed to mental illness. But we all know that multiple sclerosis does often come with some form of mental health challenge or the other. And it’s not necessarily because you’re sad that you live with MS, or you’re sad about being disabled. Though those are valid and often the case, depression could arise just because.

Don’t get me started on anxiety. Having MS is most definitely very nerve-racking. A moment of memory lapse could send one into a panic that looks like you went from zero to 100 in 2 minutes.

LET’S TALK ROOT CAUSE

GUT: Probiotic Foods

I love the trend that I am seeing on social media while discussing mental health awareness month, however. We’re talking about the gut. This is music to my ears and honestly, one of my favorite topics to discuss.

I believe that this is one of the reasons why mental health issues co-exist with MS. They have the same root cause. An imbalance in our gut.

MS and autoimmunity in general are often the end result of an initial breakdown of the gut barrier and gut dysbiosis (an imbalance in the gut microbiome). It is now pretty evident since many neurotransmitters are made in the gut. About 90-95% of Serotonin is made in the gut for that matter, so mental health challenges are often also an end-point of gut problems.

That my friends is the link between MS and mental health.

However, most people can probably rattle off 2 probiotic foods, maybe 3, and then crickets. They can recall any more. To view one of my Instagram posts on gut health, see Exhibit A to the right and just click on the graphic to access the full post on probiotic foods >>>>>

GUT: Probiotic Supplements

Food is what I consider to be by far the best way to get probiotics into the body. However, because it is not always possible to get enough or to have access to these as much as we should, we also often need probiotic supplements.

There are so many probiotics on the market that it is often a daunting task to figure out which one to go with.

Some probiotic strains are more beneficial for certain conditions.

It’s a lot of nuances involved in what to take.

This post on Instagram sheds light on these facts and helps to guide your probiotic choice. Just click on the image to the left <<<<<

GUT: Prebiotic Fibers

Part of making sure our microbiome is adequate and diverse is feeding it with the right prebiotics. These are soluble and insoluble fibers and can come as food, supplements (capsules or powder), or even teas.

Great ones are inulin from chicory root, dandelion root/ greens, Jerusalem artichoke, onions, asparagus, and jicama root. Also rich in inulin prebiotic fibers are garlic, leeks, and a small amount in bananas.

Beta-glucan can be found in barley, oats, and konjac root.

Burdock root and yacon root are rich in both inulin and FOS, an oligosaccharide. Wheat bran is rich in an oligosaccharide called AXOS.

Cacao and flax seeds are rich in polyphenols, which help increase the good bacteria and decrease the bad, simply put. Don’t sleep on seaweed either, as they are mostly soluble fiber and can produce short chain fatty acids that nourish the cells of the gut lining. Apples are rich in pectin, which is a soluble fiber. They produce antioxidants and short-chain fatty acids as well.

For a look at what I do with konjac root, for example, check out this post on Instagram by clicking on the image >>>>>

Please continue to pay attention to food sensitivities, as I will not be touching wheat or barley (due to gluten), and very infrequently will I consume oats (gluten look-alike) as a very small component of something, but certainly not a bowl of it.

I will be posting some more content on IG in the upcoming weeks where I will share more tips on how I get in my prebiotic fibers daily.

GUT: Postbiotics

What are those, you might ask? I’m not going to delve deeply into this here, but you will be hearing about it more, if you haven’t already. Essentially, they are the byproducts of the probiotics feeding on prebiotics through the process of fermentation. These by-products are useful waste products. Examples are enzymes, short chain fatty acids that nourish the gut lining such as acetate, butyrate, and proprionate, vitamins such as B and K, organic acids such as fulvic and humic acids, and more. These can be augmented by taking them as supplements.

Trauma

The pandemic has brought the issue of trauma to the forefront. But we all had trauma long before the pandemic. That’s especially true with those of us who live with MS. At this point, I believe we can all agree you don’t need to have fought in the war and been diagnosed with PTSD to have experienced trauma. We experience Big T Trauma and Little t Trauma throughout life, but how we process it, or not, determines if it has a big part to play in our future health, mental and physical. So, trauma is a root cause of mental illness.

I realized about a year ago that chronic pain was a trauma response, and I was able to work my way through it and heal from chronic pain with that realization. This means fewer medications/ supplements for me because I no longer need pain or sleep medication.

I have also recently come to the realization that MS itself is so closely linked to trauma, emotions, and a habit of not processing emotional issues adequately in childhood or earlier in life, and our bodies eventually giving up on us. This is why yoga, meditation, EFT Tapping, and such help so much.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Western Medicine has kind of separated mental and physical health but they are not separate, and we need to be working on both. To start to heal physically, in addition to everything else you’re doing for the body and brain, please make sure to care for your mental health as well, because they are one and the same.

In case you hadn’t noticed a pattern, there’s an IG post for that too! <<<<<

What Am I Saying?

It’s great to get the help that you need for mental health. I highly recommend it. See that therapist. See your psychiatrist. Take that medicine. They all work together. I’m certainly not saying forget about treating depression and anxiety and just heal your gut. No. Far from it. But so you can hopefully, perhaps not need medication forever, heal your gut is what I’m saying.

This will help the biochemical changes that the medications are trying to correct slowly start to normalize. Some people need fewer medications after a while, and some need no medications. Whatever you do, please discuss it with your doctor.

Gut health is serious business.

Food and anything that goes in our mouths is serious business. But when you have MS, and mental health challenges, you had better get familiar with how to optimize your gut health.

And if you’re up for more information, I have curated a guide on nutrition and gut health on my IG page. That’s in addition to an entire story highlight of recipes.

In Conclusion

Mental health is Health. Period!

Fix your gut for MS.

Fix your gut for mental wellness.

And also, fix your mental health for MS.

It’s all connected. One and the same. We cannot, and should not separate them.

MENTAL HEALTH IS HEALTH!!!

And as I create an online self-paced course for MS recovery, I will take you along with me as the daily journey continues.

Welcome To PPMS-ing!!!

I live with PPMS. So I thought it was befitting to name my musings as such.

As you may know, PPMS is Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. Only 10%-15% of people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) have PPMS. And there’s only one approved medication to treat PPMS. Ocrevus. PPMS is also more disabling. MS in general is autoimmune & neurodegenerative.

I may have PPMS, but PPMS does not have me. I choose to thrive to the best of my ability each day with it, despite my disability.

The Magic Is In The Food

I remember sitting in my rheumatologist’s office, probably 2 years prior to my MS diagnosis, once again going through everything and assuring me it wasn’t fibromyalgia or lupus or RA et al. I looked at him and asked, “Holistically, where do I start to attack this? What supplements would you suggest?”

That’s how I started with curcumin, garlic, ginger and I believe cinnamon pills. He’s not even a holistic doctor, so I’m not sure why I asked him that. But I wasn’t wrong to ask, because he had fundamental answers, and I built on it with magnesium, CoQ10, Omega-3 et al over the years. I was already on Vitamin D by this time, because I was aware that I was deficient, but I optimized it further and added K2.

And I haven’t looked back since. I made a decision, that I was going to use natural products at my disposal to treat this mystery inflammatory condition that had no name yet.

As a family, we also resolved further on eating organic, non-gmo foods, though it would be much later (after my MS diagnosis), before I encountered the Wahls Protocol. And it was a few more years before I came around to understanding the importance, and addressing my gut, and then the concept of toxins.

I’d come to realize at some point, that I could not out-supplement MS however. As beneficial as supplements are, the feeling I started to get after a kale salad, or some other cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage, or a few cloves of garlic, is almost indescribable. That boost was a feeling that supplements alone without an optimized nutrition plan for me, could not achieve.

“The magic is in the food, not the supplements.”-Dr. Terry Wahls, author of the Wahls Protocol. (Mind-Body & The Vagus Nerve Connection Summit, by Health Means. August 22, 2021.)

Thank God Food Is Medicine

Food is medicine for for me, and for every ailment, not just PPMS. My “medicines” are food, supplements, Ocrevus, and everything else in between like exercise, mindfulness and yoga. That’s the combo that has worked for me so far.

It has been a long journey, not so much in years, but in what I have been through, and what I have had to do, to combat MS.

This is where I will share my thoughts with you, that cannot fit in an IG post, and special offers. Hint, do follow me on Instagram. ♥

Let’s go.

Blessings,

I am Dr. Folake Taylor, and I live with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis PPMS. After 15 years in internal medicine primary care, while battling disability/ PPMS for the last 7 of the 15, I found myself diving deeper into holistic health for answers. Now I’m turning my lemons to lemonade. I refuse to allow physical and cognitive disability stop me, from fulfilling my destiny of using my voice to benefit the world with my knowledge, which I did prior to my illness. I am now sharing with the MS world especially, what I have learned and am still learning about the body’s ability to heal itself, which is quite different from what I learned in medical school. I will take you along with me as the daily journey continues, and as I create an online self-paced course for MS recovery.
